Whoa, now here's a school that's a little closer to home. The Iona Gaels [what's a gael you ask?] has also made it to the NCAA tournament by winning the MAAC. Iona is about a five to ten minute drive from the house I grew up from when I was seven through college until my parents moved when I was twenty.
I used to play soccer on the turf field over there. Kids from the area affectionately called it "Italians on North Ave" or "Idiots on North Ave" as there were many many Italians going to school there and it wasn't the best school in the land. And it was on North Ave. I had a good friend who went there. He said they all joked about it. I have no idea what the demographics and scholastic aptitute of the student body is at this point, but I know that hoops has been a pretty steady good sport there for a little while. This is their eighth trip to the NCAA tourney. I remember them making it at least one other time in the last few years.
I'll be rooting for them Thursday night as they take on LSU, the fourth seed in the bracket and number seventeen overall. Hopefully, the game will be on down here.
And to take a stab at one of the colleges I went, American University was known as AU around town and also, fittingly "Gay Jew" which always got a laugh.
