After the town hall meeting, Chuck Pennacchio and the crew headed out to canvass. We had a super voter walk list meaning that we had a list of the registered Democrats in the area and whether or not they had voted in the last few election cycles. The super voters are the ones who vote in every election.
I have no idea how many blocks we went through, but we ended up running out of all of the literature we had brought out with us. About six of us fanned on either side of the streets knocking on doors and Chuck would go from person to person talking to them for a few minutes about issues that concerned them. The issues of universal healthcare, getting out of Iraq and fighting for a living wage resonated the most that evening.
We got a bunch of people to sign up on the volunteer sheets we brought around with us. Helping out canvass, driving people to the polls, making phone calls, general organizing. All integral to this firmly grassroots campaign. I was surprised with myself in how at ease I was knocking on doors. I guess all that door knocking I did a few weeks ago petitioning for Chuck and myself got me passed the initial barriers in my head.
We were out going through the neighborhoods for a solid two hours and we were all bitterly cold. We piled into a couple cars and drove off to Isaac's Deli for some much needed grub. I very much enjoyed my sandwich hoagie and my free refills of thirst quenching root beer. Just one more event to go for the day! And the seventeen hours on the campaign trail in Lancaster will come to a close.
