This NY Times piece speaks of a 'Photography Gold Rush' right now, in terms of selling for big wads. It cites an Ansel Adams photo Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico [1941] which sold in 1981 for $71,500, at then the highest price ever paid for a print.
Fast forward to 2005 when Richard Prince's Untitled (Cowboy) fetched $1,248,000 at a Christie's auction. Prior to that, no single print had ever broken the $100,000 barrier. And then just last week a very rare print [only three copies in known existence {no negs to create new ones}] by Edward Steichen titled The Pond-Moonlight [1904] sold for $2.9M.
Wow.
And to think, my contemporary documentation of the City of Philadelphia are a steal at prices from $6 to $75 for prints from 4"x6" to 12"x18". Pricelist in the middle of my about page [working on a dedicated page] and you can find the photos starting at the homepage or through the monthly arcives.
