I don't think I ever was told why it was called burn, but that's just what playing time was called when I played sports. "Get some burn" in a sports context means getting playing time. And youngster Freddy Adu finally got his with the U.S. Mens Soccer National Team in a game against Canada.
He entered the game in the last ten minutes and got booked with a yellow card for diving [faking a foul] while trying to spark some offense for the U.S. He's all of sixteen years and is the youngest player to ever get any playing time on the U.S. National Team. At sixteen, I was travelling up and down the east coast playing soccer. I played a team from Québec in the Liberty Cup in NY once, even taunted them en français if I recall correctly.
An old buddy of mine and former teammate is currently playing for the Columbus Crew. I played against a few other kids in the MLS as well. Kinda funny to see them on TV. Brings back memories from my jock days.
