Is this nuance, stupidity, lack of organization/leadership, free will or what? The NY Times's article Senate Democrats Are Split on Tactics for Questioning Roberts outlines how the big hitters disagree. Atrios points to this post from Talking Points Memo on the division of the Democratic party on the same NYT article and this WaPo article on Iraq.
I'm going with stupidity first since we face such dire times and since going along to get along has brought us to this horrible juncture. But the free will argument is a good one too. Liberals are tolerant to a fault. Dems in the pary certainly have the option to side with the corporatists who want to turn this country back to the 20's and destroy the middle class. That's their right. Since their goals are so nefarious, I think we have the obligation to oppose them and throw them out of the party if necessary. Failing that, Mick has a good post up about what it would take to get a third party ramped up and productive in a short enough time to make the idea feasible.
