some of you may have seen this image from another angle, it's the top of City Hall. but from this angle, it takes on a whole new meaning. what billy penn, the founder of PA is actually holding in his hand, i have no idea, but it sure looks like something it's not supposed to be. i'm sure i'll find many more monuments to share all over town and perhaps some more funny angles, but most likely, none as hilarious and large as this one.
i've already taken a couple of trips to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and there's a shot of the 'Rocky Steps' in my photo album first 17 days in philly. it's a great looking museum. it has an odd yellowish tint and i can't figure out what kind of stone they used for it, but there's plenty of time for that, i'm now a member of the PMA and i'll be spending lots of time being all cultured.
It is so nice seeing Philadelphia through the eyes of a newcomer to town. I am a Philadelphian born and bred but now live in nearby Mt Laurel, NJ. I was always a Philly booster. There are more wonderful sights (and tastes) in Philly than nearly anywhere else in the world. Philly's downtown has experienced a resurgence beyond all imagination. Society Hill, Avenue of the Arts, Penn's Landing, South Street, University City and Manayunk are each scenes that express the diversity and vibrancy of a great city.
You must experience the idiosyncracies of the city like having breakfast at Melrose Diner and being asked to share a booth with strangers who will become friends before the coffee cools or standing in line to enjoy a Pat's Steak at 4:00 AM and finding yourself between a member of the Phillies and a Municipal Court Judge who are just doing the Philly thing like you are.
Unlike NYC, most of the people you meet in Philly are Philadelphians. They are a tough breed. They have to be. But they are quick and knowledgeable and very attached to their institutions. They complain but don't you try it. We are family and can talk about each other but until you know that 'red gravy' is pasta sauce, don't diss it!
